I was just as excited as T-Rex (pictured above) for the Toronto Comics Art Festival (or TCAF) last weekend! Fortunately for me, and as usual, it beat my expectations. Somehow every year the event just gets better and better, which is saying a lot for me considering they had Scott McCloud and Bryan Lee O’Malley as guests in 2009.
Sadly I left my camera at my place out of town so I don’t have any photos, but I did do my annual (and possibly last) grind of art cards for the event. I drew so many to the point where I only had time to attend one or two panels. During the rest of my time there—which was about 70 to 80 percent of the total event hours—I just handed all my cards out and bought a few things.
From that, here are some of my memorable moments during the event:
- Getting a good laugh from Jess Fink for my card of Bear, and finding out later during her comics reading that she picked the comic I referenced in her card.
- The Comics Carousel for Adults reading panel: R. Sikoryak, Jason Little, Fink, Kate Beaton and Jeffrey Lewis. All of them had such great delivery on their work!
- Confirming yet again that cartoonists can be the nicest people and that a giant library is the most awesome place to have a comics festival.
- My buddy Tex giving me a dollar in front of Danielle Corsetto—an awesome cartoonist—after losing a certain bet, with me putting it into her tip jar soon after. That dollar was gonna go in the jar anyway, but we thought we’d have some fun while seeing her at her table.
- Telling Spike I gave her the Earbuds in a game of Team Fortress 2 via The Boneyard.
All in all, a great year! And if history repeats itself, next year’s gonna blow the roof off the library once more.
